Toshiba Corp plans Rs 2,000-cr plant

T’PURAM: The Toshiba Corporation, a world leader in high-technology products, is exploring the possibility of setting up a plant in the state to manufacture giant transformers in the range of 765 kv, 1,200 kv and gas-insulated sub-stations.

A seven-member high-level team from Toshiba met Industry Minister Elamaram Kareem and Finance Minister Thomas Isaac and made a presentation on the company’s activities and interests.

The project in which the Toshiba has shown interest in the state involves an investment of Rs 2,000 crore. If the Industry Department works on the proposal on a tight schedule, it would be the first mega manufacturing unit that will come up in the state after the LDF Government came to power.

Toshiba interest in the state was triggered by its talks with NTPC on upgrading the technology at the TELK.

Recently, the NTPC had taken over the TELK. At present the TELK is manufacturing only transformers up to the capacity of 400 kv.

Gas-insulated sub-stations are not manufactured anywhere in the country. Toshiba is interested in Kochi or Cherthala because of the availability of waterways which can be developed to transport transformers of massive size to Kochi port.

After the meeting with ministers, the team was taken to Kochi and Cherthala to visit certain spots identified by the KINFRA that can meet their demands.

Toshiba, a 250 lakh crore company, had had its presence in the state in the name of Toshiba Anand.

Kochi could be NBA's base in India

KOCHI: Chennai could be NBA’s home in India within the next few months. After the success of its ‘Basketball Without Borders’ programme in New Delhi last week, the world’s most famous professional basketball league now plans to set up a base in the country.

“We plan to open a NBA office in India within the next six to eight months. We had a look at some of the facilities in Chennai, and at the SRM University, they are great. There is a lot of support for the sport too,” Akash Jain, Director-International Development, NBA Entertainment, told The Hindu here on Thursday afternoon.

“Of course, we’ve not finalised the venue yet. We’ve seen Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai and now Kochi and we’re still evaluating the locations,” said Jain, after having a look at the facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here and the Star Lagoon Hotel at Thevara here along with Mark Aronson, Vice President, NBA Entertainment’s Events and Attractions Group

Four-lane road from Pettah to Vytilla planned

Staff Reporter

Another bridge in Thripunithura mooted

Decision on NH 49 alignment soon

Minister opens jubilee block of college

KOCHI: As a solution to the heavy traffic in Thripunithura town, Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph on Friday said that he has sought a proposal for another bridge connecting Thripunithura and Pettah alongside the existing one as well as sanctioning a four-lane road from Pettah to Vytilla.

Speaking after inaugurating the new silver jubilee block of the Government College, Thripunithura, Mr. Joseph said the department has called for a proposal for a new bridge when requests for a footbridge had come in.

Construction of another bridge will solve the problem of the footbridge too, he said.

The road widening project from Pettah toVytilla has been also been discussed with Union Minister T. R. Balu, Mr. Joseph said.

A decision on the alignment of NH 49 that will bypass Thripunithura town will be taken soon.

Of the five proposals that have come up for the alignment, the Roads Department is expected to provide the most practical route to the government. http://www.hindu.com/2008/07/12/stories/2008071261580300.htm

Welcome Vivek. Hope you have seen the news item above. The only international cricket stadium
coming up in the state will b at Tripunithra. This will be mainly funded by BCCI. The decision
of BCCI is that only associations with own stadium will be allowed international matches. So
this is going to be the venue of all international matches hosted by Kerala Cricket Association
now onwards.

With that Nehru intn'l Stadium will be free for other games. They can even set up synthetic track
and there will still be enough space for a football ground. It is currently undergoing roofing and
maintainence.

FIL loads higher exports from Cochin Port

K. Venkiteswaran

Record shipment in a single day

To set up free trade warehousing zone

The company is also planning a public offer

KOCHI: Falcon Infrastructures Ltd, which operates Kerala’s first private full-fledged inland Container Freight Station (CFS) at Kalamassery, has achieved a record of loading 240 tonnes of export cargo of coffee in a single day for shipment to Russia from the Cochin Port.

The cargo belonged to Harrisons Malayalam Ltd (HML), an RPG group company which is a leading player in India’s plantation industry.

According to Mr N K Mohammed Kutty, managing director of Falcon, this is a major achievement in the backdrop of the lingering negative image of the labour in Kerala.

In yet another significant development, the Falcon CFS at Kalamasserry has started reefer services- stuffing and de-stuffing of refrigerated containers meant for perishable cargo like seafood.

The Falcon CFS, located in close proximity to the road and rail links to the upcoming Vallarpadom International Container Transshipment Terminal, is part of the integrated logistics services facility of the Falcon group in the same premises.

Falcon is also in an advanced stage of negotiation for setting up a Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) with public and private participation, said Mr Mohammed Kutty.

The Rs 200-crore project is coming up in an area of 100 acres of land near Kalamasserry and the company is also planning an initial public offer for the purpose, he added. http://www.hindu.com/2008/07/13/stories/2008071356411900.htm

City of Skyscrappers - New York. Is cochin/Kochi on the way?

Postby ernakulam on Tue Jul 15, 2008 2:58 am

Hi all,

How are you doing? I'm a regular reader of SSP cochin and read all your posts with pleasure and enthusiasm. Our kochi is growing day by day and we are dreaming to become it as a global city. We need to go a lot, but still we are on the track. But I have a small question/hestitation, is the FAR in kochi is sufficient to become it as a world city. We know the availability of land is very less in all parts of kochi(in whole kerala also). So we can't go horizontal, the only way is verticals. That is what New York, Chicago,Tokyo,Singapore became a true global city with cosmo culture. We need to think FAR as a big issue. If FAR is high, then everything will come. We need to provide the infrastructure only. OTW whatever we provide the growth will decline bcoz we can't grow horizontal further.

Thanks
